While attending Kingston College in the early 1980s, Fitzroy Francis got acquainted with the growing music scene in his Waterhouse community.
A protégé of Black Uhuru founder Duckie Simpson, Francis learned the ropes working with that group and Junior Reid, another Waterhouse talent.
Five years ago, he launched Mightyful13 Records in New York. The fledgling label had its best year in 2016 with two number one songs — Hugh English’s cover of The Beatles’ Hey Jude and Kween of The Morning Star by Jesse Jendah.
“I would describe it as a very successful year for Mightyful13 Records, especially as a producer and manager for singer Hugh English and Jesse Jendah. It’s always a great feeling as an independent label to achieve two number one songs because it demonstrates the discipline and commitment required to achieve your goals,” Francis told the Observer Online.
